After missing a month through injury, Raphael Varane could make his Real Madrid return on Sunday with the French defender available for the trip to the Estadio Anoeta.
Varane has been working with his teammates in training for around a week in order to build his fitness.
Zinedine Zidane has seen his squad impacted by an availability crisis in all parts of the pitch in recent weeks, as a result of suspensions and injuries.
Defence has been an area that has lacked stability with Sergio Ramos having been suspended, leaving the French coach with Nacho and Casemiro as a central defensive partnership.
Varane’s injury has kept him out of action since the Supercopa de Espana with Barcelona, and he was also forced to miss out on France’s World Cup Qualifiers with the Netherlands and Luxembourg.
It had been hoped that the former Lens academy graduate would be able to return to action following the international break, however Zidane’s caution with relation to fitness prevented this.
The 45-year-old is acutely aware of the demands a gruelling 55+ match season can have on a player and is known to not take risks on individuals recovering from an injury.
As such, Varane has been handed additional time to train in a controlled environment.
