Real Madrid hope to reduce Cristiano Ronaldo’s five-game ban

While they know it is unlikely to happen, Real Madrid will try until the last minute to have Cristiano Ronaldo available for this Wednesday night’s Supercopa de Espana second leg.

However, there is an awareness at the capital city club that the most likely outcome is for just one game of the Portuguese forward’s five-match ban to be successfully appealed.

The one-game suspension related to the player’s second yellow card for alleged diving could be overturned, but the sanction of four extra matches – given as a punishment for the push on referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea – is likely to be upheld.

That’s because the issue of respect to the officials has nothing to do with whether or not the referee’s initial decision was correct or incorrect.

Legal sources have also confirmed to MARCA that there is no reason for that part of the ban – which was the smallest it could have been, according to article 96 of the Spanish FA’s disciplinary code – to be lifted.

The decision of the Spanish FA’s appeals committee will be made public shortly after 13:00 CET this Wednesday.
