Real Madrid will enjoy seeing Marcelo dominate their left flank for some time yet, after the Brazilian renewed his contract at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu until 2022, with the player looking forward to spending a lot longer in the Spanish capital.
Having arrived in 2006, Marcelo’s new deal will keep him at the club until he is 34, and he has no plans to leave anytime soon.
“It gives me immense pride to be part of Real Madrid’s history,” he said.
“I feel very happy and lucky to be here and to renew for five more years is a dream come true.
“Seeing my family so happy makes me even more delighted.
“I knew Real Madrid from the TV before I arrived, but once I got here they taught me the club’s values.
“The way Real Madrid helps the world is incredible, the way children are helped out.
“It is a really great club.”
The Brazilian has played with a host of world-class players throughout his time at Real Madrid, but few have come close to his current teammate, Cristiano Ronaldo.
“I have played with greats like Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and Ruud Van Nistelrooy,” he said when asked who is the greatest player he has played with.
“But I have trained with him for so long, given him so many passes and celebrated so many goals that I have to say Cristiano Ronaldo.
“I think Neymar, who I play with for Brazil, has been the hardest one to stop.”
Zinedine Zidane has done an incredible job since taking over at the Bernabeu, and Marcelo says he has an unprecedented understanding with his coach.
“Zizou is one of the best at understanding me.
“He has managed to unite all of the players and I can understand what he wants with just one look.”
Asked if he’d ever contemplate retiring in Brazil, the left-back said he’d like to stay in the Spanish capital, but that he didn’t want to predict what would happen in five years’ time.
