Real Madrid have one of the hottest prospects in world football on their books in the shape of
Marco Asensio , but the 21-year-old very nearly ended up at Barcelona when he was younger.
This was one of the topics the player addressed during an appearance on Spanish radio on Monday evening, when he stated that he is now glad things worked out as they did.
“It didn’t work out with Barcelona,” he said on Cadena Cope’s ‘El Partidazo’, referring to the interest from the Catalan club when Asensio was still at Real Mallorca, his hometown team.
“I’m delighted to be at Real Madrid.
“There is a price for me and I don’t think I’ll move from [Real Madrid].
“[That price] is what they put as my release clause.
“I wouldn’t go to PSG, as I’m happy here.”
Speaking even further about his childhood, the Spain international opened up on the injuries he suffered when he was younger.
“I started to notice pain in my knees, with lumps appearing” he recalled.
“At times I could not walk.
“But I didn’t think about quitting football because I went to a lot of doctors and they said it’d be cured with growth.”
Zinedine Zidane will be pleased that his up-and-coming star decided to keep playing, especially as the Frenchman has always been full of praise for the player.
“Zidane told me that he hadn’t seen a left foot like mine since [Lionel] Messi,” Asensio revealed on the show.
“That left quite an impression on me, as Messi is some player.”
Another topic of discussion was the big money transfer of Neymar to Paris Saint-Germain, something Asensio said took the Real Madrid dressing room by surprise.
“It seemed strange to us [at Real Madrid] that Neymar left Barcelona,” he explained.
“He was an important player for them and the fact they couldn’t keep him was a little strange.”
Finally, he was asked about the Ballon d’Or race and stated that Cristiano Ronaldo deserves to win it for 2017.
